The Diocese of Wichita is set to observe Safe Haven Sunday on March 9, 2025, coinciding with the first Sunday of Lent. This day aims to raise awareness about the impact of pornography and equip families with tools to protect their homes.

Jake Samour, director of the Diocese's Office of Marriage and Family Life, highlights that "we are all created with a deep desire for authentic love and to receive selfless love from others." He emphasizes that while God fully satisfies this longing, marriage offers a glimpse of His love. However, he warns that pornography distorts this call to love by isolating individuals rather than connecting them.

Samour notes that many parents believe “this won’t happen to my child,” yet studies indicate most young men and many young women encounter pornography before adulthood. The ease of access through smartphones and the internet means exposure often occurs around age 14 or 15. This early exposure can shape perceptions before youth fully understand love and relationships.

According to Samour, pornography creates unrealistic expectations leading to shame, secrecy, and addiction. It alters brain function similar to drugs, making real intimacy challenging. Instead of learning self-giving love, youth may become conditioned toward self-gratification.

The effects extend into marriage as well. Samour points out that studies link pornography use with higher rates of infidelity and divorce due to broken trust and emotional detachment. Rather than fostering commitment and respect in relationships, it promotes self-centered desires.

Samour stresses the importance of loving with integrity—mind, body, and soul—and asserts that true freedom lies in God's plan for love. Healing involves accountability, grace, and a commitment to purity. By moving away from illusions distorting love, individuals can experience authentic joy in relationships.

He encourages families to take steps towards protection against these influences during Safe Haven Sunday: "Let us take steps to protect our families and restore authentic love in our homes." Resources are available at https://catholicdioceseofwichita.org/safe-haven/.
