Retired priest Father Anthony E. Stammitti passed away on January 17 at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln at the age of 78.
Father Stammitti was born in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and was ordained as a priest on May 5, 1991, in New Westminster, British Columbia by Bishop Jerome Chimy for the Eparchy of British Columbia for the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Rite. He joined the Diocese of Lincoln on May 8, 1997. During his service, he worked as a parochial vicar at St. John Nepomucene Church in Weston and St. Wenceslaus Church in Wahoo before transferring to the Diocese of Fargo, North Dakota later that year where he served until 2002.
Upon returning to the Diocese of Lincoln, Father Stammitti took on various roles within Lincoln city. He was an assistant chaplain for nursing homes and prisons while residing at Sacred Heart Parish. In 2005, he moved to Cristo Rey and focused on pastoral ministry for correctional institutions and provided care for nursing and retirement homes around Lincoln. In 2007, he added pastoral care responsibilities for Nebraska Heart Hospital alongside his existing duties.
Father Stammitti retired from active ministry on October 1, 2017.
Bishop James Conley conducted his funeral Mass on January 20 at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ with burial following at Calvary Cemetery. Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home managed the arrangements.
