Bishop Jorge Rodríguez | Archdiocese of Denver
The Archdiocese of Denver has clarified the status of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) within the Catholic Church. Despite the formal lifting of excommunication, SSPX priests remain outside full communion with the Church. However, Catholics attending SSPX liturgies may still be in full communion.
Pope Francis extended faculties to SSPX priests for absolving sins, as noted in "Misericordia et misera," emphasizing his hope for their eventual return to full communion. The Archdiocese also reached an agreement allowing marriages by SSPX priests on a case-by-case basis, ensuring validity without implying full communion status.
While SSPX priests are validly ordained, they lack permission to minister beyond specific allowances. Masses at St. Isidore and Annunciation Chapel remain unsanctioned by Denver's Archbishop. Until full communion is restored, Catholics are advised against attending these services or receiving communion there.
