A new retreat experience called "Desert Day" is being offered at Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House in Waverly. Inspired by Jesus' time in the desert, these retreats provide an opportunity for individuals to step away from daily life and spend time with the Lord.
The Desert Days, implemented earlier this year, are held monthly. Participants can arrive between 7 and 9 a.m. on a scheduled weekday and leave in the afternoon at their convenience. The day includes confessions, Mass, lunch, and Eucharistic adoration.
Father Gary Coulter, director of Our Lady of Good Counsel, explained that the idea for Desert Days came from recognizing people's need to escape daily noise and busyness without committing to a full weekend retreat. "We decided to create a more flexible, shorter retreat experience," he said.
Amanda Weeder, outreach coordinator for the retreat house, mentioned that Desert Days could serve as an introduction for those who have never been on a retreat before. "Whether someone works a 9-to-5 job or is a stay-at-home mom, we’re trying to make it accessible for all," she stated.
Lisa McInerney from North American Martyrs Parish in Lincoln has attended three Desert Days this year. She appreciates the flexibility they offer amidst her family obligations. McInerney shared her routine during these retreats: arriving early, enjoying coffee while reflecting on her conscience, attending confession, walking the grounds while praying the rosary, and spending time in the chapel as weather permits.
McInerney values Father Coulter's talks and the opportunity to receive two sacraments each visit. She also appreciates being able to leave in time for school pick-up.
Weeder noted various activities available during Desert Days such as walking the grounds or reading outside. "I just love how this retreat meets people where they’re at in their own spiritual journey," she remarked.
Father Coulter advised attendees to bring items like a bible or journal and emphasized coming with an open heart ready for silence. He described these days as "an oasis of grace."
Information about registration is available online at goodcounselretreat.org/product/desert-day. Suggested donations range from $10 if bringing lunch up to $50 if booking a private room in advance.
"The suggested donation is intentionally kept modest," Father Coulter said. The next Desert Day will be on Dec. 17 with future dates planned through May next year.
