Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach (MTKO) in Lincoln is set to host its "Shine the Light" walk on Sunday, Dec. 8, at Antelope Park. The event aims to raise awareness about the difficulties faced by those experiencing unsheltered homelessness during the winter months.
The event features a 1-mile walk designed for families and community members to gain insight into the experience of homelessness during colder weather and learn how they can assist.
“One of our core values at Matt Talbot is compassion,” said Alynn Sampson, executive director. “We invite the community to join us in seeking to genuinely understand and help alleviate the suffering associated with homelessness, especially during the cold winter months.”
Participants will start their walk at 6 p.m. from the walking path near South Antelope Park's enclosed shelter close to the playground. Free parking will be available for attendees. The route includes a half-mile loop illuminated by luminaries that passes around the playground, Auld Pavilion Recreation Center, and Veterans Memorial Garden. Walkers are encouraged to complete two laps of this loop. Registered participants will receive a stocking cap and a glow stick to place on a "HOPE" hanger at the conclusion of their walk.
A photo taken by Lori Wellman shows MTKO Executive Director Alynn Sampson alongside Everly, Eli, and Will Sampson. Recent data from a Point-In-Time Count revealed that Lincoln experienced a 17% rise in its homeless population.
“The needs are ongoing and becoming more complex,” said Sampson. “This walk is a great chance for us to partner with the community and illuminate our efforts to defeat homelessness through hunger relief, outreach, housing programs, and substance use services.”
Organizers encourage walkers to bring blankets as donations or drop them off at Matt Talbot between Monday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
