Most Reverend Robert J. Brennan, Bishop of Brooklyn, announced the passing of Reverend George R. Cowan, a retired priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn. Father Cowan was born on July 29, 1938, in New York and was ordained to the Priesthood on May 29, 1965. He passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2024.

Father Cowan's service to the Diocese included roles as Pastor at Saint Mel in Flushing and Saint Rose of Lima in Brooklyn. He also served as Parochial Vicar at several parishes including Our Lady of Miracles and Nativity of our Blessed Lord in Brooklyn, Saint Joan of Arc in Jackson Heights, and Saints Peter and Paul in Brooklyn. Additionally, he resided at Holy Innocents, Immaculate Heart of Mary, and Saint Laurence parishes in Brooklyn. His chaplaincy extended to Saint Agnes Academy High School, Nazareth Regional High School, and Saint Brendan’s High School.
