The Knights of Columbus have been recognized by Governor Andy Beshear with a Proclamation of Appreciation for their dedicated support to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Since founding the Kentucky Association for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (KAPID) in 1978, the organization has raised and distributed between $9 and $10 million to various groups aiding adults and children with intellectual disabilities, according to Tim Gahlinger.
Tim Gahlinger, who is the Grand Knight of All Saints Council 14234 and serves as the board chair for KAPID, highlighted that the association's primary initiative is an annual summer camp. This event takes place at Woodland Lakes Christian Camp in Amelia, Ohio, where at least 50 participants gather each year.
In addition to organizing the summer camp, KAPID provides donations to numerous nonprofits throughout the Commonwealth. Beneficiaries include SMC Regina’s Center, Special Olympics, and Day Spring.
A significant source of funding for KAPID comes from the Knights' Tootsie Roll Drive. This fundraising event is conducted annually by individual Knights’ councils. Additionally, a letter campaign reaching out to nearly 12,000 Knights in Kentucky raises approximately $19,000 each year, as stated by Gahlinger.
