Walsh University hosts summit to boost innovation through collaboration

Walsh University's Annual Science and Business Innovation Summit recently convened a diverse group of participants, including academia, business leaders, scientists, and government officials. The event aimed to foster collaboration for innovation and economic growth in Northeast Ohio.

The summit featured notable speakers such as Congresswoman Emilia Sykes, National Science Board Vice Chair Victor McCrary, and Michael White, former Principal Director of Hypersonics in the Department of Defense. Discussions centered on improving workforce development through partnerships between academia, industry, and policymakers.

Dr. Dan Passerini of Walsh University stated, “This summit embodies our shared vision—a community where education, industry, and government work hand in hand to prepare the next generation for success.”

The SPARQ Summit showcased technology from Shimadzu Scientific and highlighted Walsh's Center for Scientific Excellence. Day two included a roundtable discussion with local leaders and introduced Walsh’s IGNITE Innovation Hub. Dr. Tim Collins emphasized continued education's role in innovation.

Dr. McCrary called for stronger education-industry ties: “Whether you’re a plumber or a Ph.D., we must develop a workforce that can keep up.” He praised Walsh’s initiatives like the Skilled Technical Workforce Program.

Michael White spoke about developing skilled workers to meet emerging technological challenges. He noted Walsh’s leadership in this area: “It’s inspiring to see Walsh leading the way in shaping the workforce of tomorrow.”

Community leaders also recognized Walsh's contributions. Stark County Commissioner Richard Regula mentioned Walsh's innovative approach to workforce development. Jeff Dafler of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce stressed workforce readiness as key to regional competitiveness.

The summit concluded with an Innovation Challenge Competition won by Polykinetics, receiving support from Walsh’s Center for Scientific Excellence.

High school students participated in workshops exploring science careers, engaging with university faculty and industry experts on topics like NASA space science and drones.
