Franciscan University of Steubenville is set to introduce its Doctor of Ministry in Evangelization and Catechetics (DMin) Program in the fall of 2025. The program has received approval from both the Higher Learning Commission and the Ohio Department of Higher Education. This will be the second doctoral program offered by the university, following its PhD in Theology, which commenced in fall 2024.
Dr. Stephen Hildebrand, vice president for Academic Affairs at Franciscan University, expressed enthusiasm about the new offering: “We’re delighted to place ourselves at the service of the Church with this doctor of ministry degree.” He added that students' projects would apply Church wisdom to contemporary challenges, providing effective solutions that impact lives.
The DMin program aims to provide comprehensive theological, catechetical, and pastoral training for students preparing for significant roles in Catholic education and leadership. Dr. Bob Rice, director of the program, highlighted its benefits: “This degree is for those who are professionally active in Catholic ministry and are looking to enhance their skills, knowledge, and academic credentials so they can have an even greater impact.”
Designed as a terminal degree completing various master's programs with a pastoral focus, it spans three to five years and caters to working professionals through primarily online classes complemented by summer residential sessions. The culmination involves a doctoral thesis project.
Dr. Petroc Willey, professor of theology and catechetics at Franciscan University, emphasized the significance of this initiative: “This program will bring together leaders in catechetics and evangelization to explore...key areas of need in the proclamation of the Gospel.”
Theology was first introduced as an undergraduate major at what was then called College of Steubenville in 1976. Over time it became recognized as having one of the largest undergraduate Catholic theology programs nationally. In subsequent years, various specializations were developed leading up to current offerings through their Department of Theology which includes diverse degree programs available both on-campus or online.
