Revered Carl A. Kemme, D.D. Bishop | Diocese of Witchita

Bishop Carl A. Kemme and a panel of priests discussed the spiritual aspects of stewardship at the "A Gift Unveiled" evening on September 13 at Church of the Magdalen Parish in Wichita. Bishop Kemme emphasized that stewardship is not merely a financial management program but a spiritual way of life, centered on discipleship as depicted in the Gospel.

“Jesus said ‘Come and follow me,’” Bishop Kemme noted. “His invitation again and again was to various people, first to the apostles and then to all of the disciples. So, discipleship is following Jesus. It’s as simple as that, it’s profound as that. It’s all encompassing.”

Fr. John Lanzrath highlighted the history of stewardship in the Diocese of Wichita, stressing its focus beyond finances towards being a spiritual lifestyle inspired by biblical teachings.

“Monsignor McGread…always said the Bible is the textbook of stewardship,” Fr. Lanzrath stated.

Fr. Michael Brungardt shared his experience growing up with stewardship ingrained in his life, noting that Millennials are driven by a desire for good and beauty, which presents challenges when leading a parish.

“When Jesus calls the disciples – he calls them first in Mark’s gospel – to be with him, and then to send them out,” Fr. Brungardt explained.

Fr. John Jirak moderated the discussion and addressed how desire without discipline can lead to chaos while exploring ways to nurture one's faith journey daily.

Bishop Kemme spoke about maintaining discipline in living a stewardship way of life despite challenges: “It never was, and it never will be, so we keep practicing…the discipline of living a stewardship way of life.”

The conversation also touched upon generational perspectives on stewardship with Fr. Lanzrath warning against apathy leading to entitlement within communities.

“Apathy is our greatest threat," Fr. Lanzrath cautioned.

Fr. Brungardt called for assistance from previous generations for Millennials seeking deeper engagement with spirituality: “We need help mostly to truly engage this spirituality.”

The evening concluded with Bishop Kemme expressing hope for future generations after observing young participants at Camp Kapaun during summer Mass celebrations.

“I found myself leaving that experience hopeful for the future,” he remarked about youth involvement in diocesan activities.

The event included religious art displays submitted by local artists lining both sides of the gym where discussions took place.
