Children of Vatican employees began their summer holidays at a new outdoor sports area and pool as part of an annual summer program. The St. Joseph Center, inaugurated in June, features small astro-turfed fields, a tennis court, and an above-ground pool funded by benefactors who met the pope on July 18 at his residence, the Domus Sanctae Marthae.
After meeting about two dozen donors, Pope Francis traveled by car to the outdoor sports center located above the Vatican Museums to greet children and volunteers. In previous years, the summer program for children aged 5-13 was held inside the Vatican’s Paul VI hall.
The pope answered questions from the children, including who his heroes were when he was little. "My parents," Pope Francis said, according to Vatican News.
Pope Francis shared memories of growing up with his four siblings in Argentina and spending summers with his grandparents. "Talk to your grandparents" and be close to them, he advised the children. "Grandparents help us find our way."
He encouraged the children to always be peacemakers: "Making peace is the most beautiful thing in life and we have to learn to make peace at home when we argue with siblings when we get mad." He added, "Never go to bed without making peace," emphasizing not going to bed with "the spirit of war."
When asked how they could best prepare for the Jubilee Year 2025, Pope Francis suggested preparing with joy since “jubilee” is related to a word meaning “rejoicing.”
The children prayed with Pope Francis and released about 300 biodegradable balloons filled with helium and messages saying, “To you dear child: you are precious in the eyes of God.” Organizers stated they wanted these words from Pope Francis shared with as many people as possible.
