The upcoming canonization of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati is a source of celebration for the Lay Dominicans in Louisville, according to Lora Robertson, president of the St. Louis Bertrand Chapter of the Lay Fraternity of St. Dominic. The Archdiocese of Louisville hosts several third-order communities, including the Lay Dominicans, Lay Missionaries of Charity, Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites, Oblates of St. Benedict, and Secular Franciscans.

Third orders have historical roots dating back to the 13th century with St. Francis of Assisi's establishment of the Secular Franciscans. These orders allow members to live in the world while practicing their order's spirituality and rules.

Joseph Edwards from the Holy Trinity Region describes a Secular Franciscan as someone who integrates Franciscan values into everyday life. Each third order in Louisville meets monthly for fellowship and spiritual activities.

Denese Alexsonshk explains that secular Carmelites make promises recognized by the church, differentiating them from parish clubs or prayer groups.

The Archdiocese features five lay orders:

1. **Lay Fraternity of St. Dominic**: With two chapters in Louisville, they focus on prayer, study, community, and apostolate.

2. **Lay Missionaries of Charity**: Recently established in Kentucky; they serve through volunteer work inspired by Mother Teresa.

3. **Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites**: Members commit to evangelical counsels and Carmelite spirituality.

4. **Oblates of St. Benedict**: Open to any Christian denomination; they follow St. Benedict’s Rule emphasizing obedience and humility.

5. **Secular Franciscans**: Focused on living a Gospel-inspired life marked by simplicity and service.

For more information about these communities or joining them, interested individuals can contact representatives via provided emails or visit respective websites.
