Seamus Carey, Ph.D. President | Iona University

Iona University President Seamus Carey, Ph.D., recently participated in the “Conversation with Cardinal Dolan” podcast to discuss the value of Catholic education. The discussion covered topics such as the legacy of St. Columba and the Christian Brothers, Iona’s approach to artificial intelligence, and the launch of the Gabelli Center for Teaching & Learning.

Carey highlighted the benefits of an Iona education, noting that The Wall Street Journal ranked Iona as the #8 best Catholic college in the nation. "I would like to thank Cardinal Dolan for inviting me to join the show, as it is always important to highlight the transformative power of Catholic education and the important work that is being done," Carey said. "We are proud of the mission we live out every day at Iona and look forward to building upon our partnership with the Archdiocese."

Founded in 1940, Iona University is a master's-granting private, Catholic institution in New Rochelle, N.Y., with a 45-acre campus there and a 28-acre campus in Bronxville. The university enrolls nearly 4,000 students and has an alumni base exceeding 50,000 globally. It offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science, business administration; Master of Arts; Master of Science; Master of Business Administration degrees; and various advanced certificate programs.

Iona's academic offerings span across several schools: School of Arts & Science; LaPenta School of Business; NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences; and Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation. The university has received recognition from The Princeton Review’s national list of “The Best 389 Colleges” for 2024 and was ranked #66 overall by The Wall Street Journal/College Pulse’s “2024 Best Colleges in America,” including #8 among Catholic schools.

The LaPenta School of Business holds accreditation from AACSB International—a distinction awarded to only six percent of business schools worldwide—and its on-campus MBA program was recognized by The Princeton Review as a “Best Business School for 2023.” Additionally, Iona offers a fully online MBA program.

In July 2021, Iona announced the establishment of the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences located primarily on its Bronxville campus. Reflecting its Irish heritage, Iona recently expanded abroad with a new campus in County Mayo, Ireland. On July 1, 2022, reflecting its growth and prestige, Iona officially changed its status from College to University.
