Revered Carl A. Kemme, D.D. Bishop | Diocese of Witchita

Bishop Carl A. Kemme ordained three men to the transitional diaconate on Thursday, May 23, in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Wichita. The newly-ordained deacons are Rev. Mssrs. Grant Husslig, Joseph Mick, and Nicholas Samsel.

In his address from the cathedra, Bishop Kemme quoted Msgr. James Shea, emphasizing that today’s essential Christian virtue is courage. “The operative Christian virtue is not only faith or hope or even love, as essential as these are, but courage,” he said.

Bishop Kemme elaborated on this idea by describing a higher form of courage called "Apostolic Courage," which he defined as “a supernatural divine gift given to ordinary men, women, and children – like you and me – so that we can do extraordinary things.” He illustrated this concept through the biblical story of Simon Peter walking on water at Jesus' invitation.

The bishop highlighted how Apostolic Courage was demonstrated during Pentecost when Peter and other apostles took bold actions amid challenges. Reflecting on the ordination ceremony itself, Bishop Kemme noted that those present witnessed a similar display of bravery: “We have seen three young men take a bold and courageous step... Let me suggest that they have done this because of Apostolic Courage.”

Addressing the seminarians directly, Bishop Kemme stated that Jesus calls them to leave behind their secure lives for service. “Like the apostles... these chosen men will be called to live a servant’s discipleship with bold determination,” he said.

Further underscoring the depth of commitment required, Bishop Kemme mentioned several specific vows: perpetual celibacy as a sign of dedication to God and others; praying five times daily for their community; and pledging obedience to him and his successors.

“These commitments require extraordinary courage,” he remarked. “Who is inclined to do something so daring but one who has been given Apostolic Courage?”

The candidates affirmed their readiness by responding "I do" to each vow presented by Bishop Kemme.

“This response is what Jesus and the church desire to hear,” he concluded. Each affirmation represents another courageous step towards a life dedicated to loving service."

Bishop Kemme closed his homily urging the new deacons to adhere steadfastly to God's commandments with apostolic courage: “Remain in His love and desire to live in a manner worthy of your calling.”

The book referenced by Bishop Kemme during his homily is titled "From Christendom to Apostolic Mission," authored by faculty members from the University of Mary. It discusses how contemporary culture has regressed into paganism similar to apostolic times and outlines a path forward for the Church.
