On May 1, 2024, Franciscan University of Steubenville's Dr. Charles P. Nemeth, a professor of criminal justice and director of the Center for Criminal Justice, Law, and Ethics, unveiled his latest work with CRC Press titled, "Forensic Law Casebook: Judicial Reasoning and the Application of Forensic Science in Criminal Cases."
In this groundbreaking book, titled Forensic Law Casebook: Judicial Reasoning and the Application of Forensic Science in Criminal Cases, Dr. Nemeth brings real-world case law involving forensic science and evidence to the forefront of the classroom. By reviewing various forensic disciplines and applying relevant case law and decisions, Dr. Nemeth addresses the use and limitations of forensic evidence, catering to the critical need for forensic case law analysis. Through an exploration of case law reasoning, legal decision-making, and the standards governing the admissibility of forensic science, Dr. Nemeth bridges the gap between the challenges of forensic science and the requirements of the legal system.
Dr. Nemeth highlighted the significance of his work by stating, “For the last 20 years, there has been a striking lack of a casebook for forensic law case analysis.” He further emphasized the value of this new publication, explaining that "the casebook model allows students to read actual case law decisions regarding the use or limitation of forensic evidence and complements all programs in forensic science, criminalistics, and high-level investigative subject matter. This will fill an enormous gap in the field."
Dr. Charles P. Nemeth is a respected authority on professional ethics, the justice system, private-sector justice, and private security systems. Prior to his current position at Franciscan University, he served as chair and professor of Security, Fire, and Emergency Management and director of the Center of Private Security and Safety at John Jay College in New York City. Dr. Nemeth has authored multiple books and articles on law, justice, and philosophy, solidifying his reputation as a leading figure in the field.
