Benedictine University is set to launch Women’s Flag Football as a varsity sport for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year. The decision comes following the approval by the Illinois High School Association of Girls’ Flag Football as a sanctioned sport, paving the way for collegiate level participation.

"We are thrilled to introduce Women’s Flag Football as a varsity sport at Benedictine University," expressed Paul Nelson, Director of Athletics at the university. Nelson highlighted the growing popularity of flag football and the opportunities it presents for young women in sports. He also mentioned the sport's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games as a significant factor in their decision.

Caroline Schwartz, appointed as the head coach of Women’s Flag Football at Benedictine University, shared her enthusiasm for the sport's impact on female athletes, stating, "Flag Football is breaking barriers for girls, opening doors to futures they never knew were possible." Schwartz emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for women in football and the broader sports world.

Nelson reiterated the university's commitment to providing a supportive environment for female student-athletes to excel both on and off the field. He expressed confidence in Schwartz's ability to lead the program, citing her passion for nurturing student-athletes and expanding opportunities in sports.

Benedictine University plans to start competition in the spring of 2025, with scheduled games against other NCAA Division III, NAIA, and NJCAA institutions. The introduction of Women’s Flag Football at the collegiate level reflects a broader trend of inclusivity and expansion in sports, offering young women new avenues for athletic development and achievement.
