Very Rev. Jamin S. David, J.C.L., V.G. | Diocese of Baton Rouge
Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Baton Rouge and Vagabond Missions are teaming up to expand their services to inner-city youth and the community through the creation of the Underground Hub. The project, marked by a recent groundbreaking ceremony, aims to provide a safe and welcoming space for young individuals in urban areas.
Deacon Michael Parker, the Baton Rouge area director of Vagabond Missions, expressed the growth and enthusiasm surrounding the initiative, stating, "Consistently we have 30 youth that are coming here voluntarily weekly, and now we’ve cranked it up to where it’s two times a week that they’re coming." He further emphasized the significance of the Hub, calling it "literally a true gift."
The Underground Hub will offer various amenities, including a recreational space, stage area, conference room, and offices. Deacon Parker highlighted the importance of the Hub as a familiar and secure environment for the youth, stating, "This space will be something that (the youth) are already used to. The format of the Underground Hub is a safe place to be."
Vagabond missionary Sarah Vicknair shared her experiences working with inner-city youth, noting the real-life struggles and hardships they face. She emphasized the impact of the outreach program, stating, "The stories they share, whether it’s violence, whether it’s a dad who is abusive, mom who is an alcoholic, these stories are real." Vicknair also highlighted the teens' role as advocates for the Hub, saying, "These teens are the ones. They are our best messengers, our best people to tell the news of ‘Hey, this is the place to be.’”
Deacon Parker envisions the Underground Hub as a hub for community engagement, with plans for Bible studies, worship nights, and outreach programs. He expressed hopes that the Hub will serve as a catalyst for spiritual growth and development, stating, "Eventually the big goal is they will come to what’s called ‘Jesus classes,’ which is our RCIA program where the students are going to say, ‘Yes’ and come into the holy, Catholic apostolic church."
Father Josh Johnson, the pastor of Sacred Heart and national chaplain of Vagabond Missions, shared his aspirations for the Hub, aiming to cultivate a new generation of saints within the community. He expressed, "My desire is to form a new generation of saints. We have the opportunity to have the next St. Mother Teresa or next St. John Paul II right here in this neighborhood."
The collaboration between Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and Vagabond Missions signifies a commitment to serving and empowering inner-city youth, fostering a sense of belonging and hope within the community.
