The Amite City Council has taken a significant step to memorialize the impact of Father Mark Beard on the community by introducing an ordinance to rename a street in his honor. Father Beard, who served as pastor at St. Helena Church in Amite for 12 years, was tragically killed in a car accident in 2023. The proposed ordinance would rename the 200 block of West Chestnut Street to Father Mark’s Way.
Gary Beard, Father Beard's brother, expressed gratitude for the proposed street renaming, stating, “On behalf of the family, it is quite an honor, and we appreciate it.” He further emphasized the deep connection Father Beard had with the Amite community, mentioning plans for the Beard family to establish roots in the area.
St. Helena parishioner Betsy Donnelly spoke in support of the ordinance, highlighting Father Beard's inclusive and compassionate nature. “If you know Father Mark, and most everybody in our town did, it didn’t matter what color you were, it didn’t matter what religion you were, if you had a problem and needed to speak to someone about anything his door was always open,” Donnelly remarked. She described Father Beard as a remarkable individual deserving of the honor.
Reflecting on the proposed street name, Gary Beard humorously mentioned, “from a human perspective I always thought Mark got his way.” Despite the light-hearted comment, he reiterated the profound love Father Beard had for Amite and its residents.
Father Miles Walsh is currently serving as interim pastor at St. Helena Church until a new pastor is appointed by Bishop Michael G. Duca. The community continues to cherish the memory of Father Mark Beard, recognizing his enduring influence and legacy.
