Sr. Lois Paha, O.P., D. Min., reported on the recent Chrism Mass held during Holy Week in the Diocese of Tucson. At this annual liturgy, Bishop Edward Weisenburger blessed the three oils used for Catholic Sacraments throughout the year. The Oil of Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick, and the Sacred Chrism were all consecrated during the Mass.
During the Chrism Mass, Bishop Weisenburger led the priests in renewing their priestly promises. He asked, "Beloved sons, on the anniversary of that day when Christ our Lord conferred his priesthood on his Apostles and on us, are you resolved to renew, in the presence of your Bishop and God’s holy people, the promises you once made?" to which the priests responded, "I am." The priests also reaffirmed their commitments to be united with the Lord Jesus, to be faithful stewards of the mysteries of God, and to serve the Church zealously.
The Mass was attended by parishioners from across the diocese, with some parishes bringing candidates who were preparing to enter the Church at Easter. As the Chrism Mass marks the beginning of the Triduum, the faithful look forward to the upcoming days of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, leading to the Easter celebration.
The Chrism Mass serves as a significant and unifying event for the Diocese of Tucson, bringing together clergy and laity in prayer and renewal as they prepare for the sacred Easter season.
