Kentucky lawmakers are facing crucial decisions as the 2024 legislative session nears its end, with bills that could impact families and vulnerable individuals on the table. One such bill, Senate Bill 142, aims to provide four weeks of paid parental leave for state employees. Jason Hall, executive director of the Catholic Conference of Kentucky, highlighted the significance of this bill, stating, "Paid leave is huge because it gives parents the ability to be home with their children."

Hall emphasized the importance of supporting families in challenging circumstances, suggesting a range of pro-family proposals to assist mothers, babies, and families in need. Regarding Senate Bill 142, he described it as "a very modest step" towards this goal.

However, Hall expressed concerns about two other bills, House Bill 5 and Senate Bill 20, that could potentially increase incarceration rates. He criticized the motivation behind these bills, stating, "There seems to be an interest today in punishment for punishment’s sake," while advocating for a more rehabilitative approach to criminal justice.

In addition to legislative matters, Hall addressed education-related issues, particularly advocating for school choice legislation that empowers parents to select the best educational options for their children. He encouraged voters to support an education amendment that would provide financial support for students outside the public school system.

As the legislative session progresses, Hall urged Catholics to engage with their lawmakers, support pro-family initiatives like Senate Bill 142, and oppose bills that could have negative consequences for families and vulnerable populations. He also emphasized the importance of exercising caution and research-based policy-making in the decision-making process.
