Reverend Larry Silva, Bishop | Diocese of Honolulu

In a recent homily for the Fifth Sunday of Lent, the Bishop reflected on the lives of St. Damien and St. Marianne, highlighting their selfless dedication to serving others. The Bishop expressed, "We have great pride and respect for St. Damien and St. Marianne, the two Hawaii saints who are now enjoying the glory of heaven."

Acknowledging the challenges faced by parents in raising children, the Bishop noted, "Parents who raise their children to be good and loving people know that it is not an easy task." He emphasized the sacrifices parents make to ensure their children have opportunities to grow and develop, including disciplining them in the ways of the Lord.

Addressing the struggles of young people striving to remain faithful to their beliefs, the Bishop remarked, "Young people who want to be faithful to Christ also have a great struggle." He highlighted the challenges they face in standing firm in their convictions, especially in the face of societal pressures.

Reflecting on the importance of selflessness and service, the Bishop urged, "We are all busy people and do not need yet another thing to do." He emphasized the need to prioritize serving others and working towards positive societal change, even if it requires sacrificing personal desires.

The Bishop pondered on the motivation behind selfless acts, stating, "But what would motivate us to have the kind of spirit that Father Damien and Mother Marianne had, a spirit that serves without counting the cost, a spirit that readily buries the seed of self-fulfillment?" He emphasized that true motivation comes from a heart touched by love.

In conclusion, the Bishop reminded the congregation of the ultimate reward for self-denial and service to others, saying, "We all long for glory, for happiness, and for rest. But Jesus reminds us that these are the fruits of self-denial, of service to others, and of laying down our lives." Through the examples of saints and the teachings of Christ, believers are encouraged to embrace selflessness and find true fulfillment in serving others.
