Revered Carl A. Kemme, D.D. Bishop | Diocese of Witchita

The Diocese of Wichita has recently acquired a 155-acre campground in Reno County, with plans to develop the property for use by diocesan ministries, including Totus Tuus summer camps. Anthony Keiser, director of the diocesan Office of Faith Formation, expressed the hope that the new camp will provide a place for people to encounter Jesus. He stated, "Our hope is that this new camp will give people a place to go out into the wilderness and encounter Jesus."

The new campground, located just 65 minutes from downtown Wichita, features a spring-fed lake, 12 existing buildings, an amphitheater, walking trails, and other amenities. Diocesan leaders are currently working on developing a master plan and business plan for the camp, with preliminary plans and conceptual drawings to be completed later this year.

With the expanded capacity at the new location, the number of campers at Camp Totus Tuus is set to increase from 84 to 128 per week. This means that more than 300 additional campers will be able to attend Camp Totus Tuus over the summer, reducing the number of families on the waiting list. Keiser expressed his excitement about the increased capacity, stating, "I'm thrilled that this new facility will allow us to serve even more children and families."

Former camper and camp counselor, Abby Godfrey, shared her own experience of how the camp changed her life and brought her back to the church. She highlighted the importance of the camp in providing a unique and special encounter with the Lord. Godfrey stated, "Our campers and counselors are truly encountering the Lord in a unique and special way at camp."

Fr. Drew Hoffman, a former counselor and priest of the Diocese, emphasized the significance of the camp in today's culture. He mentioned, "This camp is a vital thing, a necessary thing, in a culture that is very nervous and anxious about quiet and separation and solitude." Hoffman also noted the camp's role in nurturing vocations, with more than 90% of diocesan seminarians having attended Camp Totus Tuus at some point.

Funds raised through the One Family, Fully Alive in Christ! Campaign will cover the cost of purchasing the property, renovating existing facilities, and eventually building new cabins. An endowment will also be established to assist with ongoing maintenance and operations, as well as providing financial aid to families in need.

In conclusion, the acquisition of the new campground by the Diocese of Wichita represents a significant step in expanding youth programs and providing a space for spiritual growth and encounter with the Lord.
