Carlos Zapién, the Music Director of the Schola, is being recognized for his incredible talent and the gifts he shares with the community. The Schola, a church choir, provides music for St. Augustine Cathedral and diocesan liturgies, under the guidance of Zapién.

Zapién explains that a "schola" is a dedicated group of vocalists committed to expressing the rich tapestry of sacred music within the reverent confines of a church setting. The members of the Schola are not just ordinary singers; they are individuals who have been called by God to use their unique gifts to enhance the liturgical and spiritual experience of every person who hears their melodies.

Last year, the Catholic Foundation provided a grant to support the development of young singers in the Schola. Thanks to this grant, the Cathedral and the Catholic community now have the privilege of enjoying exquisite musical performances during weekends and special liturgies. Most of the young singers supported by the grant are students at the University of Arizona's School of Music, which has a top-notch choral program.

Zapién is always on the lookout for more talented individuals who feel the Holy Spirit's nudge to join the Schola. Auditions can be arranged by contacting him at the Cathedral or via email. He is open to discovering undiscovered talent and believes that everyone with a gift in music should consider joining this music ministry.

In addition to his role as Music Director of the Schola, Zapién is also the Artistic Director of the "Cathedral Concert Series." This series, sponsored by the Catholic Foundation and Rio Nuevo, offers monthly concerts with different themes and professional performers. These concerts have been incredibly successful, with overwhelming support from the community. Zapién expresses his deep appreciation for the support and gives special thanks to the Catholic Foundation and Rio Nuevo for making it all possible.

The next concert in the series, titled "Canto Latino," will be held on February 13th at Our Lady's Chapel. Zapién himself will be performing. All are welcome to attend for free and can RSVP through the Cathedral Concert Series website to estimate space requirements. The New Outlook's Calendar of Events provides further details on this concert and upcoming concerts in the series.

The Cathedral Schola, under the leadership of Carlos Zapién, continues to enhance the spiritual experience of the community through their beautiful music. Their dedication and talent are a true gift to the diocese and to all who have the opportunity to listen to their melodies.
