Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., D.D. Archbishop | Archdiocese of Newark website
The Archdiocese of Newark has released its regulations for the upcoming season of Lent, a 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and repentance in preparation for Easter. These regulations were approved by Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., and apply to Catholics in the Archdiocese who are in good health.
According to the announcement, the days of both fast and abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday, which falls on February 14, and Good Friday, which falls on March 29. On these days, Catholics are encouraged to fast and abstain from meat as a way to honor the suffering and death of Jesus Christ and to prepare for His Resurrection.
The other Fridays of Lent, which include February 16 and 23, March 1, 8, 15, and 22, are designated as days of abstinence. On these days, Catholics are called to abstain from meat as a form of self-discipline and reflection.
During days of fasting, Catholics are advised to have one full meal and two smaller meals, which should not exceed the size of the full meal. This practice of fasting is obligatory for Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59.
In addition to these regulations, Canon 920, §1 states that all the faithful, after receiving their first Holy Communion, are obligated to receive Communion at least once a year. This requirement applies to the Lenten season as well.
For those seeking Lenten resources, the Archdiocese of Newark recommends visiting the website rcan.org/lent-resources/. Additionally, individuals who have questions about Lent or Lenten obligations are advised to speak with their local pastor. Further information about Lent can also be found on the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) website.
These regulations aim to guide and support Catholics in the Archdiocese of Newark as they engage in spiritual practices during the Lenten season. By observing the traditions of fasting, abstinence, and communion, believers are encouraged to deepen their faith and prepare themselves for the joyous celebration of Easter.
