St. John's University's Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science (GSRM) recently hosted its 28th annual Insurance Leader of the Year (ILOTY) Award Dinner, raising over $2.9 million to fund student scholarships and support academic program initiatives. The event, held at the New York Marriott Marquis, brought together members of the global insurance industry, senior leadership from the University, students, faculty, business executives, and guests.

The prestigious award recognized Mario Greco, Group Chief Executive Officer of Zurich Insurance Group, as the 2023 Insurance Leader of the Year. Greco expressed his gratitude, stating, "I am truly honored to be recognized as the Insurance Leader of the Year. This award is a testament to the collective efforts of the incredible team at Zurich. It is through their dedication and hard work that we have been able to drive positive change in the industry and deliver exceptional value to our customers."

During his acceptance speech, Greco addressed important issues facing the insurance industry and emphasized the need to nurture young talent. He announced a $500,000 donation to extend the Zurich Fellows scholarship program for graduate studies and to establish the Center of Middle Market Risk Management Excellence.

Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., President of St. John's, thanked Greco and all the attendees for their generosity. He encouraged leaders in the insurance industry to "hire, mentor, and provide meaningful opportunities for St. John's students." Fr. Shanley highlighted the distinctive nature of a St. John's business education, which combines training in theology and philosophy with practical skills.

Brandon W. Sweitzer, Dean of GSRM, was recognized for his contributions to the industry and his role as a mentor and leader. Before the event, students had the opportunity to receive career advice from Hank Watkins, Regional Director and President of Lloyds for the Americas Region.

Current and potential GSRM students also had the chance to network with industry professionals. Christopher Bhola, a senior at St. John's Tobin College of Business, shared his transformative experiences as a GSRM student. He expressed his gratitude for the networking opportunities provided by the annual event.

The dinner also welcomed high school seniors who were interested in pursuing a career in the insurance industry. Malcolm Whitman, a senior from Vermont, visited the St. John's campus and attended the dinner, appreciating the magnitude of the event. Julia Ocasio, a senior at Kellenberg Memorial High School, expressed her excitement about the opportunities available at St. John's for a career in the insurance industry.

The Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science, part of The Peter J. Tobin College of Business, has a rich history dating back to 1901. The school offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in insurance, risk management, and actuarial science. Through its Tobin Center for Executive Education, the University provides education, training, and consulting services to the industry.

Maciek Nowak, Dean of The Peter J. Tobin College of Business, expressed his gratitude for the support from the insurance industry. He highlighted the importance of engaging with industry leaders and the impact it has on the school's programs and research efforts.

The success of the Insurance Leader of the Year Award Dinner highlights the commitment of the insurance industry to supporting education and fostering talent. With the funds raised, St. John's University can continue to provide valuable opportunities for students and advance the field of risk management and insurance. The 2024 Insurance Leader of the Year Award Dinner is already scheduled for January 15, 2025.
