Deacon Alfred Adams, Sr. has retired after 33 years of dedicated service as a deacon assistant at East St. James Parish. Born and raised in Vacherie, Deacon Alfred has been a devoted servant of God in the Diocese of Baton Rouge.
Deacon Alfred's journey as a deacon began on September 29, 1990, the Feast of the Archangels, when he was ordained. His assignment to St. Michael's Church in Convent held a special significance for him. Over the years, he has been actively involved in various aspects of the Catholic faith within our cluster.
In addition to his work at the parish, Deacon Alfred has also been associated with the Office of Black Catholics. He served on the Advisory Board under Bishop Shelton Fabre and was appointed as the director of the office in 2005. His commitment to his faith extended beyond the parish as he actively participated in the Knights of Peter Clavier, the Knights of Columbus, and numerous ministries in both our cluster and the diocese.
Throughout his 33 years of ministry, Deacon Alfred has touched the lives of many. He has been involved in baptisms, weddings, funeral services, communion services, and has served and preached at numerous Masses. His dedication also extended to the preparation of high school students for confirmation and the celebration of confirmations, first Communions, and the RCIA program.
Deacon Alfred's impact on the community and the spiritual lives of those around him cannot be overstated. He has been a constant presence, offering guidance, support, and spiritual enrichment along the River Road. His list of ministries is extensive, and his work has left a lasting mark on many lives.
A member of the community expressed their gratitude, saying, "Thank you, Deacon Alfred. You have been a wonderful blessing to all of us. I have enjoyed working with you and feel very blessed to call you not only my deacon, but my friend." They further acknowledged the valuable life lessons and experiences that Deacon Alfred has shared over the years. His unwavering faith, courage, and trust in God have been an inspiration to many.
As Deacon Alfred begins this new phase of his life, he will continue to serve as the director of the Office of Black Catholics in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. It is a well-deserved period of leisure that he will be able to enjoy with his wife Diane and their family. Deacon Alfred's commitment and dedication to his ministry have earned him the admiration and respect of all those who have been fortunate enough to know him.
