Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez | Archdiocese of Philedelphia
Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez of Philadelphia has sent a letter to the Jewish community in recognition of Hanukkah, which begins next week. In his message, Archbishop Pérez extended "prayerful best wishes" on behalf of the Catholic people in the region.
He noted the symbolism of the menorah, stating, "The Hanukkah menorah reminds us of the ultimate triumph of light over darkness, and the Lord’s covenant of faithfulness with His people." He acknowledged current challenges faced by many around the world: "Ours is a time of uncertainty, fear, and violence for many, particularly in the Holy Land."
Archbishop Pérez also emphasized hope during this season. "As a new candle is lit on the menorah each day, humanity receives a fresh sign of enduring hope fueled by faith," he wrote.
Reflecting on Jewish tradition, he said: "As you recall the glory of the Temple’s rededication by Judas Maccabeus in Jerusalem centuries ago, may the glow of the menorah fill you with joy as you strengthen the loving bonds of faith, family, and friends."
He concluded his message with “Chag Urim Sameach!” and signed as Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, D.D., Archbishop of Philadelphia.
