Abortions conducted through mail-order drugs have increased by 40% in the United States from the first half of 2024 to the first half of 2025, according to a report released this week by #WeCount. The rise follows changes in federal policy under the Biden administration, which lifted requirements for in-person doctor visits before prescribing mifepristone, a drug used for medication abortions.
Previously, during the Trump administration, regulations mandated that patients meet with a doctor in person before receiving abortion medications. These safeguards were removed by the current administration. Since then, there have been reports of women harmed by misuse of abortion drugs obtained online. One incident cited involved an Ohio medical resident who was indicted after allegedly obtaining abortion drugs fraudulently and administering them to his pregnant girlfriend without her consent.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, responded to these developments by stating:
"Peer-reviewed research found three quarters of ER visits within 30 days after abortion drug use were coded as severe or critical. Two separate, independent studies also found more than 1 in 10 women experience at least one severe adverse event. Complications can include hemorrhaging, infection, sepsis and even death."
She added: "A large national poll found 7 in 10 voters want to roll back Biden’s mail-order abortion drug rule and reinstate safeguards like in-person doctor visits."
Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America describes itself as a network with over one million members nationwide dedicated to ending abortion through advocacy and supporting pro-life candidates and policies.
