Most Rev. Austin A. Vetter Bishop | Diocese of Helena

On February 9, Bishop Austin A. Vetter welcomed 90 married couples to the Cathedral of St. Helena for an evening celebrating marriage milestones. The event included couples who have been married for varying lengths of time, from newlyweds to those approaching seventy years together.

The evening began with a Mass during which the couples renewed their vows. After the Liturgy of the Eucharist, Bishop Vetter gave a personal blessing to each couple. Photographs were taken and shared with participants. The celebration continued with a reception in the church hall.

During his homily, Bishop Vetter thanked the couples for their dedication and recognized their contributions within their families and to each other. He emphasized that "the pivotal role of their homes as missionary outposts, shaping the future of the Church through their commitment to love and service." He also stated his hope that "the evening would serve as a wellspring of grace and inspiration for the attendees and the entire congregation."

This event is part of ongoing work by the Office of Family Life to strengthen family culture in parishes by integrating couples more deeply into church life. According to Bishop Vetter, supporting marriages beyond wedding days is important for both church and society.

The Diocese of Helena has identified weakened marriages as a factor contributing to declining faith participation across the United States. To address this issue, it is enhancing marriage preparation programs and increasing events like this celebration.

Bishop Vetter plans to hold similar marriage blessing events in three other Deaneries later this fall, inviting all interested parties to attend.
