Shelton J. Fabre, Archbishop at Archdiocese of Louisville | Archdiocese of Louisville
More than 100 people attended the annual Green Mass organized by the Archdiocese of Louisville on September 25 at St. Raphael Church. The event, focused on care for creation, was led by Archbishop Shelton J. Fabre and Deacon Ned Berghausen.
During his homily, Deacon Berghausen encouraged attendees to recognize not only the visible beauty of nature but also "discern the intelligence, power and love of the creator who fashioned them." He highlighted how elements of Catholic worship praise both God and creation, referencing the Liturgy of the Word, the Nicene Creed’s mention of “Maker of heaven and earth,” and the Eucharistic Prayer: “Blessed are you God of all creation.” He added, “Let us look for those signs in nature that point us to God.”
After Mass, participants gathered in St. Raphael’s media room for a reception featuring presentations from high school students about environmental stewardship efforts. Trinity High School senior Daniel Roche discussed energy-efficient light bulbs and proper disposal methods. Assumption High School promoted sustainable clothing choices through a display encouraging “slow fashion” over fast fashion.
Members of St. Xavier High School’s Environmental Club described their vegetable garden project, which donates produce to Dare to Care food bank and educates peers about reducing waste. DeSales High School presented information on energy efficiency initiatives at their campus. Representatives from Sacred Heart Schools, Mercy Academy, and Presentation Academy were also present.
