The Archdiocese of Louisville has announced the closure of St. Therese of Lisieux parish, effective August 31, 2025. The decision follows consultation with all parties entitled to be heard and the recommendation of the Priest Council on April 24, 2025.

According to the decree, "For a just and canonical reason, after having heard all who have the right to be heard on the matter, and after having consulted the Priest Council (4/24/25) of the Archdiocese of Louisville, the parish of St. Therese of Lisieux is, by this decree, suppressed, and its territory is given to the care of St. Elizabeth of Hungary effective August 31, 2025."

Church officials cited a significant decline in both Catholic population and parish registrations in recent years as reasons for the closure. The statement noted that low numbers have made it difficult to maintain church facilities and property.

"A reduction in the number of parishes within close proximity in the area will allow all parishes to increase in size and enjoy greater vitality. Duplication of programs and services within a small geographic area will be eliminated, allowing for the more efficient allocation of resources," according to the official announcement.

The archdiocese also pointed out that fewer available priests require assignments to larger communities so pastoral care can continue for all members. The territory previously served by St. Therese of Lisieux will now fall under St. Elizabeth of Hungary's responsibility.

The decree was issued in Louisville on July 25, 2025.
