Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville
Archbishop Shelton J. Fabre has called on members of the Archdiocese of Louisville to pray for those affected by a mass shooting that took place at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis on August 27. The incident occurred during an all-school Mass at the church, which is next to Annunciation Catholic School.
According to reports from Minneapolis officials, two children aged 8 and 10 were killed in the shooting, and 17 others were injured, including 14 children. Authorities said that shots were fired through the windows of the church during the service.
“We are heartbroken by the deadly shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, where students were gathered for the school Mass this morning,” Archbishop Fabre said in his statement.
“I am saddened by this senseless act of violence,” he continued. “I invite the faithful of the Archdiocese of Louisville to join me in praying for the repose of the souls of those killed, the victims who were injured, and the Annunciation community. Let us continue to pray for peace in our communities.”
In response to these events, leaders from the Archdiocese have communicated with local school principals and presidents regarding safety protocols and security measures within their schools.
Amy Nall, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, addressed school leaders with a statement: “As a local Catholic community, we join in prayer for our brothers and sisters in the Annunciation community.”
“This situation is an important reminder to follow safety and security practices,” she added.
Nall acknowledged that such incidents can cause a range of emotions among students and staff. She encouraged school leaders to reassure their communities that emergency management plans are current and being followed. She also noted that counselors are available to support those who may be emotionally impacted by these events. Resources from organizations like the Kentucky Center for School Safety will be shared with schools as well.
Nall concluded her message by urging school leaders to rely on faith: “As a church community, let us lift in prayer all those whose lives were forever changed today, and may we lean into our faith to know that God never abandons us.”
