Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez | Archdiocese of Philedelphia

I was saddened to learn of the sudden death of Bishop Lawrence E. Brandt on the Feast of Pentecost.

On behalf of the entire Church of Philadelphia, I extend prayerful condolences to Bishop Brandt’s many friends as well as Bishop Larry Kulick and the priests, religious, and lay faithful of the Diocese of Greensburg.

Bishop Brandt was beloved by those he served as a parish priest and bishop with zeal and fidelity for over 55 years. His tireless work in the Vatican’s diplomatic corps, as a brilliant canonist, and as a shepherd deeply concerned for the spiritual and temporal well-being of the souls entrusted to his care leave an indelible mark on the Universal Church.

In this time of mourning, may all those grieving find joy in the promise of the Resurrection. I pray that Bishop Brandt’s life of selfless dedication and service to others will inspire all to share the compassionate love of Christ generously with everyone they encounter.

May God grant Bishop Brandt the gift of eternal life and may our Blessed Mother wrap her mantle of merciful consolation around all those who loved, admired, and respected him.

Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, D.D.

Archbishop of Philadelphia
