Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., D.D. Archbishop | Archdiocese of Newark website
After a comprehensive assessment and consultation with parish leadership, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, has decreed the permanent closure of St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Bayonne, New Jersey. The church, located at 10 West 4th Street, had already ceased divine worship services since September 22, 2024.
The decree officially relegates the building to "profane but not sordid use," according to canon 1222, §2 of the Code of Canon Law. This decision follows a process that included legal considerations and community feedback regarding the closure.
St. Andrew's merged with St. Mary, Star of the Sea Parish in 2016 to form Blessed Miriam Teresa Demjanovich Parish but continued to face financial difficulties. Factors leading to the closure include a significant decline in mass attendance by 35% since 2016 and a decrease in income by 31% post-COVID. The parish's funds are insufficient for necessary repairs estimated at over $7 million, while only $3.8 million is available.
A final Mass was held on September 22, 2024, attended by many parishioners and community members. Future worship services will be conducted at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church at 326 Avenue C in Bayonne.
The Archdiocese recognizes St. Andrew’s historical and architectural significance and plans to preserve elements of the church for veneration and memorialization. Gratitude is extended to those who have been part of its history, with an invitation to continue their spiritual journey at St. Mary's.
