Reverend Larry Silva, Bishop | Diocese of Honolulu
The Bishop delivered a homily on the Sixth Sunday of Easter, addressing the significance of Jesus' departure from his disciples. The message conveyed that while saying "I am glad you’re leaving" might seem harsh, it holds a deeper meaning in the context of Jesus' journey to his Father. The Bishop explained that Jesus' departure was not due to a lack of desire to be with his followers but rather because he wished to be with them in a more profound way.
Drawing parallels between graduation and young people leaving home, the Bishop emphasized that these departures bring both sadness and joy. Similarly, Jesus’ ascension was meant to prepare for the coming of the Holy Spirit. "He opened not just the tomb, but our hearts," allowing believers to receive strength through the Holy Spirit even amid challenges like persecution or rejection.
The Bishop highlighted that receiving Confirmation does not exempt one from life's hardships but grants gifts such as wisdom and courage through the Holy Spirit. This empowerment enables individuals to maintain joy despite adversity. Jesus' physical departure allows him to offer himself as sustenance in holy communion, providing an intimate connection beyond mere sight or sound.
The homily concluded with an invitation for attendees to regularly engage with their faith community. By participating in church activities and carrying their spiritual experiences into daily life, believers can extend God's love further afield: "He will be able to show his love to even more people through you."
Ultimately, this duality of presence and absence underscores how Jesus continues to touch lives by being within each person who embraces his teachings and shares divine love with others.
