Reverend Dennis P. Dettenwanger passed away on Friday, May 9, 2025, in Fairfield, Ohio. Born on October 8, 1937, in St. Louis, Missouri, he was baptized at Holy Family Church in St. Louis. He pursued preparatory studies at St. Gregory Seminary in Cincinnati and studied theology at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West in Norwood, Ohio. He was ordained on May 30, 1964, at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral in Cincinnati by Archbishop Karl J. Alter.
Father Dettenwanger's first assignment came on June 17, 1964, as an assistant at Annunciation Parish in Cincinnati and part-time teacher at Mother of Mercy High School until 1966. On June 20, 1973, he joined the part-time staff at St. Ursula Academy while continuing his role at Annunciation Parish. By July 15, 1974, he was appointed assistant at St. Matthew Parish in Norwood and taught at Marian High School.
His career progressed with an appointment to the faculty of Seton High School on August 1, 1979, while remaining an assistant at St. Matthew Parish. On August 19, 1980, he became a resident associate at St. Aloysius Parish in Delhi and continued teaching at Seton High School.
On June 8, 1992, Father Dettenwanger was appointed pastor of St. Ann Parish in Hamilton for six years and later became pastor of St. Joseph Parish on July 1, 1994 while maintaining his role at St. Ann Parish until his reappointment on June 9, 1998 for another six-year term.
He served as pastor of both parishes until retiring from active ministry on July 1, 2007.
The Reception of the Body will take place on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at St. Ann Church located at Pleasant Avenue in Hamilton from 4:30 p.m., followed by visitation until 7:00 p.m.
The Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Thursday, May 15th at the same church with Most Reverend Robert G. Casey as celebrant.
Burial will occur later that day without a funeral procession to Gate of Heaven Cemetery located on Montgomery Road in Cincinnati.
