Gail Cotton, a former police officer and long-time educator, has taken on a new role at Christian Brothers University (CBU) as an Admissions Counselor. Her journey to CBU began after retiring from Memphis-Shelby County Schools in August 2024, following the disbandment of the Student Equity, Enrollment & Discipline team.

Cotton's career has been marked by her commitment to helping others. Her past experiences include serving as a police officer and working as a math and reading instructional coach. She also worked as a truancy advisor at Memphis-Shelby County Schools for many years.

Upon joining CBU, Cotton quickly made an impact by offering personal support to students facing challenges. When she learned about a student commuting daily to an internship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, she offered rides to ease the student's burden. In another instance, she assured an incoming student who had lost a leg in an accident that he could still start school and personally visited him with gifts.

Lisa Manning from the Admissions Office noted Cotton's "exceptional work ethic and professional demeanor," highlighting her ability to connect with students while setting high expectations.

Initially focused on assisting undergraduate freshmen, Cotton found her niche working with older students who are returning to education or transferring athletes. "It’s rewarding to work with people who may have applied, started but never finished," said Cotton.

Many of these returning students are former nursing majors who left due to financial hardships or family responsibilities. Cotton reaches out to them personally, understanding their situations through her own life experiences.

Justin Brooks, CBU’s Assistant Director of Recruitment and Strategy, praised Cotton for creating a communal environment that fosters trust and communication among students.

Cotton's office is located in Buckman Hall at CBU.
