Archbishop Allen Vigneron | Archdiocese of Detriot
Following the election of Cardinal Robert Prevost as Pope, Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger expressed his sentiments regarding the new pontiff.
"It is with deep joy and gratitude to God that I join the faithful around the world in celebrating the election of our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV," stated Archbishop Weisenburger. He expressed thanks for both the Pope's election as Bishop of Rome and his dedication to serving the Church.
Archbishop Weisenburger shared his surprise at seeing a United States citizen elected as Pope, noting that "Pope Leo XIV's election leaves me exceptionally joyful." He highlighted the new Pope's extensive experience, including years of ministry in Peru and his understanding of South America. Additionally, he mentioned Pope Leo XIV's close ties with Pope Francis and his charitable work for the poor and marginalized.
The Archbishop emphasized that these qualities likely influenced the Cardinals' decision: "His lifetime of ministry includes many years of ministry as a bishop in Peru...and personal humility are all qualities that perhaps focused the light of Christ upon him for his brother Cardinals to see."
In conclusion, Archbishop Weisenburger called for prayers for Pope Leo XIV as he assumes his role as successor to Saint Peter. "Let us pray for Pope Leo XIV as he now begins his sacred ministry...let us also ask the Lord to pour forth every grace of the Holy Spirit that he will know wisdom, compassion, and joy as he leads us into the future."
