Visitors to downtown Louisville often pause on the Fifth Street sidewalk in front of the Cathedral of the Assumption. They admire its spire, read historic plaques, view the statue of Mother Catherine Spalding, and take photos, according to Father Frederick W. Klotter, pastor of the cathedral.

Father Klotter enjoys watching visitors "marvel" at the cathedral's beauty and history. He likes to chat with tourists as they conclude their weekend visit with Sunday Mass.

"I wish that more of our own citizens could see Louisville through the eyes of our tourists because they have a real appreciation of some of the beautiful things that we have down here," he said.

The Jubilee Year 2025 offers an additional reason to visit this historic cathedral located at 433 South Fifth Street. Archbishop Shelton J. Fabre has designated it as a pilgrimage site for the Jubilee Year. In announcing the Holy Year, Pope Francis called Catholics to be renewed as "Pilgrims of Hope."

The cathedral is one of six pilgrimage sites in the Archdiocese of Louisville where the faithful can receive a plenary indulgence.

Completed in 1852, but with roots reaching back further, the Cathedral of the Assumption was originally part of St. Louis Church established in 1805. It became part of Louisville's diocese in 1841 after moving from Bardstown.

Mother Catherine Spalding began Presentation Academy in its basement in 1831. Under Bishop Benedict Joseph Flaget's care, construction on what would become today's cathedral started around St. Louis Church in 1849 and was dedicated three years later.

Architect William Keely designed it in American Gothic style; architect Henry Whitestone rebuilt its steeple after a fire raised it to 287 feet—the tallest spire nationwide then—in 1858.

Since construction ended over one hundred fifty years ago now—1912 saw significant renovations followed by another two rounds: first during '72-'94 lastly restoring parts like Mary’s Assumption fresco originally painted atop ceilings back when built initially mid-19th century!

Throughout time challenges arose yet played roles such as Bloody Monday riots (1855), Civil War memorial masses held here too! World War I saw Father Patrick Malachy Joseph Rock surveying seven hundred daily prayers offered within these walls!

Historic floods spared this sacred space allowing refuge for survivors while feeding those affected amidst devastation surrounding them outside doors left open wide welcoming all needing help most dearly desired then or now still ongoing efforts providing meals daily today continuing ministry begun decades past long ago indeed...

Notable visitors include figures ranging from saints like Mother Theodore Guerin & Thomas Merton alongside others spanning globe even royalty themselves King Charles III Queen Camilla once Prince Wales Duchess Cornwall respectively amongst many more renowned individuals gracing halls throughout years gone by since first opening day till present moment alike always remembered fondly cherished memories forever lasting legacies shared together across generations bridging gaps uniting peoples everywhere regardless background beliefs differences unimportant compared greater good humanity
