Revered Carl A. Kemme, D.D. Bishop | Diocese of Witchita
Bishop Carl A. Kemme delivered a homily at a Mass in memory of the late Pope Francis on April 26 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The event coincided with the Christian Burial Mass held for Pope Francis, known as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, at the Vatican earlier that day.
"As members of the Church, it is right that we gather here to pray for the repose of our beloved Holy Father and entrust him to the mercy of God," Bishop Kemme remarked, noting the event's timing on the eve of Divine Mercy Sunday. He expressed his hope that "the mercy of God wrap Pope Francis in complete love" so that he might share eternal life.
Reflecting on the legacy of Pope Francis, Bishop Kemme acknowledged, "Much has been said about Pope Francis and his legacy in the Church." He anticipated further discussions as preparations were underway for the conclave to select a new pope.
Recalling his personal experience, Bishop Kemme noted his admiration for Pope Francis, who appointed him nearly 11 years ago. Describing a brief meeting with Pope Francis, Bishop Kemme remembered, "I was moved by his engaging eyes and the warmth of his greeting."
"Pope Francis had a heart for people, especially the simple, the humble, the poor, the marginalized," Bishop Kemme stated. He highlighted the pope's efforts to connect with diverse groups, from public officials to the homeless and marginalized individuals.
Bishop Kemme emphasized the pope's simplicity and commitment to Christ's teachings: "It came out in his homilies and letters, reminding us of Christ’s preferential option for the poor."
He continued, "I have often thought that Pope Francis would have been an amazing parish priest and pastor." Bishop Kemme reflected on the pope's public appearances, notably his last gesture of greeting and blessing the crowd at St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday.
Acknowledging some criticisms, Bishop Kemme remarked, "I too would have wanted him to be less ambiguous in his teaching." However, he believed Pope Francis' pastoral approach and love for Christ "will make his legacy a lasting memory."
Bishop Kemme concluded by expressing gratitude to those present, emphasizing the importance of prayer and mercy: "May the merciful arms of Christ himself welcome you to your eternal home and may you rest in peace there, good and faithful Pope Francis!"
