Priests who serve the military play a vital role in maintaining the spiritual well-being of Catholic servicemembers scattered worldwide. A report from the Orange County Catholic reveals that fewer than 200 active-duty Catholic priests serve nearly 1 million Catholic soldiers, who comprise a quarter of the U.S. military.

Father Allen Stahl of the Diocese of Orlando was the first priest from his diocese to become a military chaplain, initiating a legacy of service that began in response to a 1987 pastoral letter by Bishop Thomas Grady. “I actually became stronger in my own spirituality as a priest because I had to rely upon the Lord more,” said Father Stahl.

Father Stahl's role extended beyond serving Catholics; he supported any soldier in need, often participating in military activities to foster camaraderie. Over a 20-year career, he traveled to diverse locations such as the Sinai Desert, Germany, and Haiti. Reflecting on his experiences, he said, “It’s the spiritual things you do for them.”

Another Orlando priest, Father Chris Dorsey, became a U.S. Army chaplain in 2019. He served at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, providing pastoral care that included faith formation and support for soldiers facing challenges. He noted, “If you’re not going through the bad stuff with people, they’re not going to come to you when bad stuff happens.”

During his assignment in Japan at Camp Zama, Father Dorsey contended with isolation but embraced his mission. He was instrumental in supporting soldiers and initiating programs like feeding the homeless. His work emphasized the importance of trust and providing a spiritual refuge for servicemembers.

Father Dorsey reflected on his role, stating, “You may be the only priest some may ever meet. To be there in times of difficulty … is a beautiful ministry in and of itself.”
