Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville
Donors to the Archdiocese of Louisville have established a new fundraising record for the annual Catholic Services Appeal (CSA), exceeding its initial target. As of March 28, the largest free-will offering by the archdiocese gathered over $4.42 million, surpassing the $4.2 million goal. This comes after last year's record contribution of $4.24 million.
Melissa Herberger, who coordinates the appeal, noted the significance of these consecutive record-setting years. "That parishioners are embracing the call to be faithful stewards.” According to Herberger, 55 parishes have met or exceeded their targets so far. She praised the efforts of pastors and parish staff, stating, “The appeal would not be successful without the efforts of our wonderful pastors and their parish teams.”
Herberger also highlighted the creativity and dedication of pastors in promoting the appeal. "Each year, the pastors find creative and inspiring ways to promote the appeal and the ministries supported by CSA funds,” she remarked. Herberger holds the position of coordinator for annual giving and stewardship under the Office of Mission Advancement and emphasized that all parishioners benefit from CSA resources.
The appeal's promotional materials this year have included videos shared on social media, showcasing some of the programs funded by CSA, such as Campus Ministry, Catholic Charities, and family ministry. These efforts help underline the diverse reach of CSA within the central Kentucky community.
Further, Molly Keene Smith, director of the Office of Mission Advancement, highlighted the substantial contributions to the Seminarian Education Fund. She observed that donors have the choice to specifically fund seminarians, noting, “The average cost to educate each seminarian per year is $65,000." So far, over $428,000 has been raised this year for seminarian education, which Smith described as critical support amidst an increasing number of seminarians.
While donations to the 2024 CSA will continue in the coming months, one goal remains — achieving the full participation target, which currently stands at 89 percent. This goal aims to increase household participation in the appeal.
