The Archdiocese of Newark has announced its schedule for Holy Week 2025, a significant period for Catholics and Christians worldwide beginning with Palm Sunday on April 13 and concluding with Easter Sunday on April 20. Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, the Archbishop of Newark, will preside over several services at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
On Palm Sunday, April 13, Cardinal Tobin will lead the noon Mass commemorating Jesus's arrival in Jerusalem. The gospel account of Christ's Passion and Crucifixion will be read, and blessed palm fronds will be distributed.
The Chrism Mass will take place on April 14 at 8 p.m. Cardinal Tobin will conduct the blessing of the Chrism, an oil-balm mixture used for various sacraments throughout the archdiocese. Representatives from each parish will receive the newly blessed oils, and clergy will renew their ordination promises.
Cardinal Tobin will preside over the Holy Thursday Mass on April 17 at 7:30 p.m., which will include the traditional washing of feet and the Eucharist's institution.
On Good Friday, April 18, Cardinal Tobin will oversee the 3 p.m. service commemorating Christ's suffering. Spanish-language liturgies and performances by the Cathedral Choir will follow.
The bilingual Easter Vigil Mass is scheduled for April 19 at 8:30 p.m. It marks the first celebration of Jesus's Resurrection and will include the festival of light and the initiation of new Church members through baptism, Eucharist, and confirmation.
Cardinal Tobin will celebrate Easter Sunday Mass on April 20 at 10 a.m. in Spanish. Although this Mass does not feature the ceremonies of the Easter Vigil, it commemorates Christ's Resurrection.
All Holy Week liturgies will be available via livestream on the Cathedral Basilica's YouTube channel. For additional details, individuals are encouraged to visit newarkbasilica.org/holyweek.
