The Mercy House, a ministry under the Archdiocese of Newark, is set to organize its inaugural baby showers for expectant mothers in need across its three locations. The events are scheduled for March 18 in Newark, April 3 in Jersey City, and June 4 in Elizabeth, each commencing at 11 a.m.
During these gatherings, expectant mothers will be treated to refreshments and provided with gift bags containing essential baby items such as diapers, wipes, ointment, and toys. Mercy House staff and volunteers will also be present to discuss ongoing support services available to mothers post-childbirth. Additionally, attendees will have opportunities to win raffle prizes including strollers, car seats, and other new baby equipment.
“These baby showers are not only a joyful way to celebrate expectant mothers, but they also serve a critical purpose in providing much-needed supplies,” stated Cheryl A. Riley, director of The Mercy House. “Many women we serve can’t afford traditional baby showers where gifts often overflow. These events ensure they receive essential items to help care for their newborns.”
The initiative reflects The Mercy House’s roots as a resource and referral center primarily aimed at pregnant women and mothers. Although its mission has broadened to assist anyone in need, the organization remains dedicated to supporting mothers by offering food, clothing, and nursery essentials. Diapers and children’s clothing continue to be among the most requested items at its centers.
“When a woman learns she is expecting, it can feel overwhelming — especially if she doesn’t have the resources or a support system,” Riley explained. “At The Mercy House, we want all mothers to know they are not alone. We are here to help ensure they have everything they need to help raise their children. These baby showers highlight that commitment.”
In addition to these new events, The Mercy House will maintain its traditional spring celebrations such as the Easter Candy Giveaway on April 14 in Jersey City, April 15 in Newark, and April 16 in Elizabeth. Additional gift giveaways are planned for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day in May and June respectively.
Established in 2018, The Mercy House offers nonperishable food items, clothing, baby supplies, furniture assistance with employment searches and housing for those in need. Its facilities located in Newark, Jersey City and Elizabeth serve approximately 300 individuals weekly.
