Pope Francis, who had shown signs of improvement in recent days, experienced a setback due to "an isolated crisis of bronchospasm," according to the Vatican. This episode led to coughing and vomiting, which worsened his respiratory condition. The incident occurred while he was alternating between respiratory physiotherapy and prayer at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

The Vatican's evening medical bulletin reported that around 2 p.m., the pope experienced a bronchospasm crisis followed by vomiting. Medical staff acted quickly to clear his airways and initiated noninvasive mechanical ventilation, which successfully stabilized his blood oxygen levels.

“The Holy Father remained alert and oriented at all times, cooperating with the therapeutic procedures,” the Vatican stated. Despite this response, a source indicated that Pope Francis' prognosis remains guarded.

The pope's treatment includes mechanical ventilation through a mask that provides higher oxygen flow compared to previous methods he used since February 27. Doctors will monitor his condition over the next 24 to 48 hours for any complications from inhaling vomit.

Despite these challenges, Pope Francis is reportedly in good spirits and responding normally to his environment. He has received numerous messages of support from well-wishers during his hospital stay.

Due to his health issues, Pope Francis will not preside over Ash Wednesday services on March 5 in Rome. Instead, Cardinal Angelo De Donatis will lead the procession and Mass. The announcement followed reports of the pope having had a restful night but continuing treatment for double pneumonia since February 14.

While earlier bulletins described his condition as critical following an asthmatic crisis on February 22, recent updates indicate some improvement with alternating oxygen therapy methods. However, concerns remain about potential complications from inhaling vomit during the latest incident.

In addition to changes in scheduled events like Ash Wednesday services, Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández will lead prayers for Pope Francis as part of ongoing nightly rosaries held by cardinals since February 24.

The Vatican has yet to announce plans for the Angelus prayer scheduled for March 2 after releasing prepared texts without audio messages or appearances from Pope Francis in recent weeks.
