Sister Veronica Volkmer, a member of the Marian Sisters of the Diocese of Lincoln, passed away on February 15 at Marycrest Motherhouse. She was 88 years old.
Born Lynne Louise Volkmer in Nebraska City, she was the eldest child of Leo and Laurine (Heng) Volkmer and grew up on a farm near Julian. Sister Veronica joined the Community of the Mercy Sisters of St. Francis—now known as the Marian Sisters—at St. Thomas Orphanage in Lincoln on August 1, 1958, where she received her religious name.
She professed her first vows in 1960 and took her final vows in 1966. Throughout her life, Sister Veronica served in various roles including teaching, catechetical work, and prison ministry. Reflecting on her prison ministry during a 2019 interview, she stated: “The Christian definition of love is to want what’s best for the other person. When you look at these people you want what’s best for them and you are happy to be there.”
In addition to her ministerial work, Sister Veronica held leadership positions within the Marian Sisters Community. She served as formation director from 1976 to 1986 and was elected major superior in 1988, serving until 1994.
Sister Veronica leaves behind four siblings along with nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and members of the Marian Sisters community.
