HOPE Services Hawai‘i is marking its 15th anniversary, highlighting its growth from a small outreach program to the largest homelessness service provider on Hawai'i Island. The organization began as an initiative of the Roman Catholic Church in Hawaii’s Office for Social Ministry (OSM), which was established in 1986. HOPE Services officially became a nonprofit corporation affiliated with the Diocese of Honolulu in 2010.
Over the past fifteen years, HOPE Services has expanded from mobile health vans and homeless shelters to operating more than three dozen housing and shelter sites across the island. The organization now provides comprehensive housing, trauma-informed care, medical respite, and support programs to thousands of individuals and families.
Brandee Menino, CEO of HOPE Services Hawai‘i, said their mission has always been “to inspire hope and change lives.” When asked what inspires their continued work, she responded: “Our faith calls us to see Christ in every person we serve. We are inspired by the everyday saints who dedicate themselves to caring for those most in need.” She also pointed to the Saints who are part of HOPE’s roots: “We follow their example by putting our faith into action.”
The organization’s work aligns with recent messages from church leaders regarding hope and service. Pope Francis said: “Let us open wide our hearts so that hope may enter.” Pope Leo XIV added: “Hope is found where charity meets those most in need.”
The Jubilee Year declared by Pope Francis will begin on Christmas Eve 2024 with the opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica, inviting all to become pilgrims of hope alongside marginalized communities worldwide. Pope Leo XIV has also recognized individuals who provide charitable works in community centers, shelters, schools, soup kitchens, and care homes.
