Revered Carl A. Kemme, D.D. Bishop | Diocese of Witchita
On January 10, the St. Joseph House of Formation opened its doors for the first time to Hispanic families with teenage sons who may be considering a vocation to the priesthood. Father Garett Burns, director of priestly vocations in the Diocese, identified a unique challenge regarding priestly vocations within Hispanic families. This led to the creation of an event aimed at promoting a culture of vocations within these families, called "La Cena de Zebedeo" (Zebedee’s Supper).
The Diocese emphasizes that opening seminary doors to Hispanic families is crucial. The event aims to provide an impactful experience, giving families a better understanding of seminarian life. Family plays an integral role in many Hispanic young men's identities; thus, incorporating them into vocational discernment is essential.
Fr. Burns explained: “The name Zebedee was chosen for the dinner because he is the father of the apostles James and John. The Gospels tell us that both were working with their father when Jesus called them to be His disciples and ‘so they left their father Zebedee in the boat’ (Mk 1:20). It is a necessary moment in every disciple's life to leave their parents ‘in the boat,’ and it is necessary for every parent to allow their children to ‘leave the boat’ as they live out their vocation.”
During the dinner, young men and their families had opportunities to engage with others about priestly vocation, education, and seminarian life. Families also received presentations on vocations and toured the Formation House campus. Mrs. Ana Rumback, mother of Rev. Chris Rumback, shared insights on how parents can accompany young men during this discernment process.
Father Burns believes listening to testimonies helps apply Gospel truths to daily life and embody ideas from Scriptures and Church teachings.
“It was important for families to hear from someone with first-hand experience of all the emotions, joys and challenges that accompany a son called to the priesthood,” said Fr. Burns. He concluded: “Often it is our ignorance that keeps us from taking bold steps to follow God’s plan... Taking a tour of the Formation House with opportunities for practical questions about discernment can provide greater freedom for young men and their families."
