A new initiative aimed at deepening the understanding of the Eucharist among Catholics has been implemented in Butler County, Nebraska. The program, centered around Matthew Kelly's book "33 Days to Eucharistic Glory," was launched by Christina Podolak of Presentation Parish in Bellwood and supported by Fr. Sughroue.
Fr. Sughroue recalls his ordination in 2011 and the profound realization he had about holding the body of Christ during Mass. This experience continues to influence his approach to celebrating the Eucharist and his efforts to bring attention to its significance.
The initiative is part of a broader effort called “Walk With One,” which encourages Catholics across the U.S. to engage in heart-to-heart accompaniment with others, aiming for a transformative impact on families and communities.
Christina Podolak proposed distributing "33 Days to Eucharistic Glory" after attending a Eucharistic Congress where Bishop Cozzens inspired attendees to share their experiences with others. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by rural parishes, Podolak saw this as an opportunity for parishioners to deepen their faith.
The book distribution began at Christmas, with parishioners starting their reading on January 1st and concluding on February 2nd, coinciding with the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus. Flocknote was used as a tool to keep participants on track throughout this period.
Parishioners have shared positive feedback about incorporating daily readings from the book into their lives. Colleen Storm from St. Francis Parish mentioned that her family read passages together each evening, while Butch Hain from Presentation expressed enthusiasm for how engaging he found the material.
Todd Hilfiker also noted that while easy to understand, the book prompted deeper reflection during daily readings and appreciated how it was integrated into weekly homilies by Fr. Sughroue.
The initiative has seen all 300 copies distributed among parishioners and visitors alike, indicating strong interest and engagement within these communities.
Christina Podolak emphasized that "the goal of reading the book was to get people to think about the Real Presence," encouraging them to reflect on God's personal communication amidst daily distractions.
As Fr. Sughroue looks forward to witnessing further spiritual growth among parishioners following this consecration experience, he remains committed to fostering a deepened faith within his community through continued engagement with such initiatives.
