At St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Colwich, a new Eucharistic adoration chapel is under construction, symbolizing the community's dedication to Christ. This chapel, designed for 12 adorers, will be a central part of parish life, offering a space for prayer and connection with the Blessed Sacrament.

For over 15 years, St. Mark has hosted perpetual adoration from Monday through Friday. However, the current chapel is small and poses challenges for worshippers. "It’s very small. It’s a little claustrophobic," said Fr. Brian Nelson, pastor of St. Mark. "And you can’t get very many people in there."

Parishioner Lynette Brittain shared similar sentiments: “The 6 a.m. hour before me has had five or more (people) in it, making it a bit tight when I show up at 7.”

The new chapel project began in December as part of the One Family, Fully Alive in Christ! Campaign, which allows parishes to use 20% of raised funds for local projects. Other campaign priorities include teacher salary enhancements and repairs to Wichita’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

“I look forward to the chapel being a sign of the faith of our parish,” Fr. Nelson stated.

Located behind a historic grotto built post-World War II to honor service members, the new chapel integrates practical features like a restroom that doubles as a storm shelter.

Fr. Nelson noted that starting the chapel project was "the biggest visible impact" of the campaign on their parish community.

Lynette Brittain and her husband served as campaign chairs due to their commitment to adoration: "(We) love the fact that the chapel will stand as the center of our parish life."

Fr. Nelson emphasized keeping Christ at the center: “Keep the Lord at the center of what we are doing.”

Parishioners anticipate using this sacred space for prayer and reflection during busy days or weekly adoration hours.

“The presence of Jesus in a beautiful yet simple chapel will only add to...our campus,” said Lynette Brittain.
